昨日、Twitterを見ていたら八木勇征の英語版インタビュー記事が紹介されていたので読んでみました。

オタク向けのレビュー記事サイト「TheReviewGeek」のインタビューを受けたとのことですが、このサイトはテレビ番組や映画や本や音楽などなどのレビュー記事をまとめたサイトのようです。



インタビュー部分のみと、ライターの記事の2ページがあるので、それぞれ和訳します。

ところどころ分からない単語はあったけど、大まかにはシンプルな文体だったので分かりやすく、「国内で『美しい彼』のインタビューを受けていた時に話していたこと、ほぼそのままだな」と思いました。

が、私はプロの翻訳家ではないし、まだまだ英語勉強中だし、言い回しのニュアンス、意訳はそれぞれ感覚が違う部分があるため、完璧では無い旨ご留意ください。

1ヶ所「Yagi waxes about Hagiwara's ～」の所は初めて見る動詞で、辞書を見ても分からず、アメリカ人の友達に聞きました。

彼女は「珍しい言い方ですね」と言って、調べて辞書のリンクを送ってくれたのですが、どうもオタク用語扱いのようで、他の英語ネイティブも「初めて見る」と言ってたのでビックリ。

「詩的な言い回しをした」という意味のようです。
（他にも、ずっと話し続ける、という意味があるそうですが、多分ここでは当てはまりません）

翻訳アプリはDeepLがGoogle翻訳より精度が高いと言われていますが、この「waxes」の部分はニュアンスを無視して「語った」となってました。

では、勉強を兼ねて訳してみます！

In an exclusive interview with the lead actor, 26-year-old Yagi shares one spoiler from the cinema release My Beautiful Man – Eternal (marked below) and explains what it’s like to be a part of the two-season series, My Beautiful Man (Viki).
Meanwhile, Yagi keeps busy touring with the group and releases a new music video for FANTASTICS from EXILE TRIBE’s latest hit, Tell Me.

日本の BLドラマ「美しい彼」と、2023年の映画「劇場版　美しい彼～eternal～」の俳優、FANTASTICS from EXILE TRIBEの八木勇征さんが、TheReviewGeekに彼の役柄や共演者の萩原利久さんについて語ってくれました。
主演を務めた26歳の八木さんは、独占インタビューで映画のネタバレを1つシェアし、ドラマではどのような役割をしていたか説明しました。
一方、八木さんは新曲「Tell Me」のMVをリリースしたFANTASTICS from EXILE TRIBEとしても多忙な日々を送っています。

Many manga-based romance dramas are silly and sweet, but My Beautiful Man seems to have something more.
What do you think is different about this story?

多くの恋愛マンガを原作としたドラマはくだらなくて甘ったるいものですが、「美しい彼」はそれだけではないようです。
このストーリーは、どこが他のものと違っていると思いますか？

Reading the original work, My Beautiful Man, was filled with detail – my mind was flooded, image after image.
On top of that, there was the emotional atmosphere, the feelings of the characters and the difficult but humorous language – especially in Hira’s monologues.
I don’t think I’ve seen many works that are so delicately and finely packed.

原作「美しい彼」を読んだ時、緻密な描写が満ち溢れていて、僕の中に次々とイメージが湧き上がってきました。
更に、エモい雰囲気、キャラの心情、難しいけれどユーモアのある文体。
特に平良のモノローグがそうですね。
僕は今まで、こんなに繊細で素敵なものが詰め込まれた作品をあまり見たことが無かったと思います。

In the My Beautiful Man series, you and Riku Hagiwara do a great job of making your characters and their relationship appear genuine.
It feels like you must trust each other to have been able to create something so heartfelt.
Tell us about your first meeting and how well you know each other.

「美しい彼」シリーズでは、お二人はとても感情豊かなキャラを作り上げられるよう、お互いに信頼し合っていたように見受けられました。
初対面の時のことと、どんな風に親しくなっていったか教えてください。

I met him for the first time at a costume fitting for the TV drama. My first impression was that he’s very serious and gentle.
But as we worked together, I began to feel that he’s truly innocent and open-minded. Riku is younger, but we like similar things, so we became closer and closer. He’s a guy who lives for his hobbies.

ドラマの衣装合わせの時、初めて彼に会いました。
第一印象は、彼はとても真面目で優しい人だ、というものでした。

Tell us, what’s beautiful about your co-star Hagiwara Riku? What would he say is beautiful about you?

共演者の萩原利久さんの美しいところはどこですか？また彼ならあなたのどこを美しいと言うでしょうか？

Riku has really beautiful eyes. Those big black eyes are so distinctive that they almost suck you in. Riku often says my muscles are beautiful (LOL!).

利久は本当にキレイな目をしています。大きな吸い込まれそうな黒目がとても際立ってますね。
利久はよく僕の筋肉をキレイだって言ってくれます。（笑）

How is the character different or similar to you (beyond the interest in performing)?

清居と八木さんの似てるところと、違っているところはどこですか？

Kiyoi and I are surprisingly opposite! The only similarity is that we both want to feel loved.

清居と僕は、驚くほど真逆のタイプです。
唯一の共通点は、人から愛されたいと思っているところですね。

The role of Kiyoi seems quite difficult as the character evolves but then falls back into his previous state. Tell us how you become Kiyoi (across 2 seasons and a movie).

清居というキャラは、シーズン2と映画で変わっていっても、また元の状態に戻ってしまったり、ととても難しそうですが、どんな風に清居を演じましたか？

I was talking with Director Sakai about how Kiyoi is definitely the princess and heroine by far, having finally been united with Hira. As for Kiyoi’s evolution, there’s a change in honesty about his feelings.

監督の酒井さんから、「清居はついに平良と結ばれた、完全なるプリンセス（ラストには王子様から助けてもらえるお姫様）かつヒロイン」と言われていました。
清居の成長した部分は、自分の気持ちに正直になったところですね。

Season 2 of My Beautiful Man left us with Hira trying to face Kiyoi head-on. But it’s not in Hira’s character to think that way.
Can you tell us a little bit about what we can expect in My Beautiful Man – Eternal? Does Kiyoi manage to help Hira move forward as he’d wish?

シーズン2では、平良は清居を見上げるのではなく、向き合おうとしていましたが、それは平良というキャラの考え方とは違っています。
「劇場版　美しい彼～eternal～」で期待できる部分を少し話してもらえますか？
清居は彼の期待に平良が応えられるよう、何とか手助けしていくのでしょうか？

Even once they’re together, Kiyoi still has the heart of a princess, yet he wants Hira to be able to face him on equal footing instead of looking up. Rather than having Kiyoi change to match Hira, I continued with the spirit of ‘Hira, you come to me.’

付き合うようになったとは言え、清居はまだプリンセス心を持ち続けていて、平良が自分を見上げるのではなく、対等に向き合おうと自発的に変わっていってくれたら良いのに、と思っています。
清居が平良に合わせて変わるより、「平良、こっちに来いよ」という気持ちを持ち続けていました。

What was the most difficult moment or scene for you to convey in My Beautiful Man? Perhaps a romantic scene? How did you and Hagiwara Riku prepare for it?

「美しい彼」の中で、最も演じる上で難しかった部分やシーンはどこでしたか？
多分ですが、ロマンティックなシーン？
萩原利久さんとはどんな準備をしていましたか？

There’s a climactic scene in an abandoned factory in My Beautiful Man – Eternal where Kiyoi desperately rushes to Hira, thinking he’s died. It was difficult to find a balance because Kiyoi had to control his heartbreak, not able to cry or scream. But at that moment, character aside, I was in pain too.

劇場版のクライマックスでは、廃工場で清居が平良は死んでしまったと思って慌てて駆け寄るシーンがあります。
清居は泣き喚くことが出来ずに悲痛な思いを抑えなければいけなかったので、そのバランスを取るのは難しかったです。
でもその瞬間は、役はさておき僕自身も辛かったですね。

It must be difficult to balance your schedule and your mind with acting roles in addition to your position within FANTASTICS from EXILE TRIBE. How has that experience shaped you as an actor and a performer?

FANTASTICS from EXILE TRIBEのメンバーという立場に加えて、俳優業をするのはスケジュール的にも精神的にもバランスを取るのが難しいはず。
その経験は、俳優兼パフォーマーとしてのあなたにどのような影響を与えていますか？

All these experiences are positive and beneficial. For example, through acting, I have learned how to better express emotions through lyrics as a performer. I was able to expand my sense of values and other aspects of myself. It’s contributed greatly to my growth as a performer but also as a person.

経験しているもの全て、ポジティブで有益なものです。
例えば、演技を通してパフォーマーとして歌詞に込められた感情をどのように表現していくかを学べています。
自分の価値観や視野を拡げていくことが出来ました。
パフォーマーとしてだけでなく、人として成長することにも、とても良い影響を与えてくれています。

It sounds like in school you were headed toward a sports-related future. Do you believe your soccer injury is something that led you to your current career?

学生時代はスポーツ関連の方向に進んでいたようですね。
サッカーでの怪我は、今のあなたのキャリアへ導いたものだと思いますか？

Definitely yes. Without that injury, I would certainly not be where I am today. I was shocked at the time, but now I see it positively – it’s something that had to happen.

確実にそうです！
怪我が無ければ、今の僕は確実にここにはいません。
当時はショックでしたが、今は起こるべくして起こったことだと前向きに捉えています。

Your role in HiGH&LOW THE WORST X couldn’t be more different to My Beautiful Man. You’ve previously noted wanting to work in other genres including action and historic dramas. Now that you’ve done action, what’s the role you would love to do next?

「HiGH&LOW THE WORST X」での役は「美しい彼」とは全く違うものでした。
あなたは以前、アクションや歴史物など違うジャンルの仕事をしてみたいとお話しされていましたが、アクションはもうされましたね。
では次はどんな役をやってみたいですか？


HiGH&LOW THE WORST X

It’s a big dream, but one day I’d like to be in a Taiga Drama, (NHK historical drama) and become a character of that era, such as Shinsengumi or Yoshitsune. Living in the past is an experience I’d like to try.

大望ですが、いつか大河ドラマに出て、新撰組や義経のような時代物の役を演じてみたいです。
歴史上の人物として生きる経験をしてみたいんです。

Tell us a little bit about yourself on a personal level. What inspires you to keep going? Do you see a long-term career in acting and/or music?

もう少し個人的な質問をさせて下さい。
俳優業や音楽活動で、今後長期に渡って築き上げるキャリアの展望は見えていますか？

Acting and being an artist are equally rewarding in the sense that one can leave behind a body of work. I am motivated by my fans who look forward to seeing me, so I can do my best! I hope to continue to do so for a long time to come.

演技もアーティストとしての活動も、どちらも作品を残せるという意味ではやり甲斐があります。
僕を見るのを楽しみにしてくれているファンの方々が僕のモチベーションになっているので、僕も頑張れています。
これからもずっと続けていきたいです。

As My Beautiful Man – Eternal finishes its cinema run in Japan and Vietnam, the rest of the world’s ‘HiraKiyo’ fans await a subtitled glimpse of the movie that picks up from My Beautiful Man Season 2 (Viki) of the light novel-based narrative. The DVD (with English subtitles) will be available from Wednesday, 8th November. Meanwhile, Yagi has been busy touring with the group and releasing a new music video for FANTASTICS from EXILE TRIBE’s latest hit, Tell Me.

One thing that makes My Beautiful Man stand out is the chemistry between Hira and Kiyoi, managing to strike a balance between the sometimes-silly tropes with heartfelt delivery. Yagi tells us that he met his counterpart and on-screen love interest, 24-year-old Riku Hagiwara, for the first time at a Season 1 costume fitting. “My first impression was that he’s very serious and gentle. But as we worked together, I began to feel that he’s truly innocent and open-minded. Riku is younger, but we like similar things, so we became closer and closer. He’s a guy who lives for his hobbies.”

「美しい彼」が際立っているのは、平良と清居が織りなす馬鹿げたお約束ごとと、心温まるやり取りとのバランス取りに成功したところだ。
八木さんは、スクリーンで恋人役を演じた萩原利久さん24歳とはシーズン1の衣装合わせで初めて会ったと話してくれた。
「彼の第一印象は、とても真面目で優しい人、というものでした。でも一緒に働いてみると、彼は本当にピュアで心の広い人だと感じ始めました。利久は歳下ですけど、僕らは似たところがあって、それでどんどん距離が縮まりました。彼は趣味に生きる男です。」

He doesn’t reveal Hagiwara’s interests, but with the title of the series, we couldn’t help asking the question: What’s beautiful about your co-star and what would he say is beautiful about you? Yagi waxes about Hagiwara’s distinctive, pull-you-in black eyes but with a laugh, shares that his counterpart loves his muscles. It’s a great intro to a discussion about his character Kiyoi, whom he asserts he’s nothing like. “The only similarity is that we both want to feel loved.”

八木さんは萩原さんの趣味を明かさなかったが、このシリーズのタイトルからして私たちは質問せずにはいられない。
萩原さんの美しいところは？そして彼ならあなたのどこを美しいと言う？
彼は詩的に、萩原さんの吸い込まれるような黒い瞳が際立っている、と語ったが、笑いながら萩原さんは彼の筋肉を愛していると教えてくれた。
彼は、清居と自分は全く似ていない、「唯一の共通点は、人から愛されたいところ」と言う。それは、清居というキャラを語る上で、最高の導入だ。

As for getting into character, he’d discussed it with Director Sakai (Tomorrow I Will Be Someone’s Girlfriend – Disney+) and they’d agreed. By far, Kiyoi is the princess-heroine of the tale. Kiyoi’s character arc shifts from entitled to desiring an equal partner. Yagi continues, “there’s a change in honesty about his feelings.”

キャラを掴むために、彼は酒井監督（明日、私は誰かのカノジョーDisney+）と話し合い、共通認識を持った。間違いなく、清居はこの物語のプリンセス兼ヒロインだ。清居というキャラの変わっていく部分は、憧れの存在から対等なパートナーになりたいと願っていくようになるところだ。八木さんは「自分の気持ちに正直になっていく、という変化がある」と続ける。

But even with Kiyoi’s shift in self-understanding, Yagi explains that he needed the princess spirit to carry through their relationship to both stay true to his character and influence Hira’s emotional evolution. “Kiyoi still has the heart of a princess, yet he wants Hira to be able to face him on equal footing instead of looking up. Rather than having Kiyoi change to match Hira, I continued with the spirit of ‘Hira, you come to me, [I’ll wait’].’

しかし、清居が自己分析できるよう変わっていっても、キャラをブレさせず、かつ平良を精神的に成長させる存在として、清居がプリンセスでい続けることは二人の関係性を保ち続けるために必要だった、と八木さんは語る。「清居はまだプリンセス心を持ち続けていて、平良が自分を見上げるのではなく、対等に向き合おうと自発的に変わっていってくれたら良いのに、と思っています。
清居が平良に合わせようとするより、『平良、こっちに来いよ（俺は待ってる）』という気持ちを持ち続けていました。」と。

With that in mind, Yagi talks about his most difficult scene and how, so intertwined with the character, the poignant piece struck him on a personal level. “There’s a climactic scene in an abandoned factory in My Beautiful Man – Eternal where Kiyoi desperately rushes to Hira, thinking he’s died.” Yagi goes on to explain, “It was difficult to find a balance because Kiyoi had to control his heartbreak, not able to cry or scream. But at that moment, character aside, I was in pain too.”

八木さんは最も難しかったシーンと、それはどんなものだったかについて、役に感情移入をして個人的にも痛ましいシーンでは辛い気持ちになった、と語り、「劇場版のクライマックスでは、廃工場で清居が平良は死んでしまったと思って慌てて駆け寄るシーンがあります。清居は泣き喚くことが出来ずに悲痛な思いを抑えなければいけなかったので、そのバランスを取るのは難しかったです。でもその瞬間は、役はさておき僕自身も辛かったですね。」と続けた。

Sharing a bit of his own story, Yagi notes that taking on acting has aided his growth as an artist, helping him better express emotions. “I was able to expand my sense of values. It’s contributed greatly to my growth as a performer but also as a person.”

彼個人としては、演技をすることはアーティストとしてより感情表現出来るようになるために役立っている、とのことだ。「自分の価値観や視野を拡げていくことが出来ました。パフォーマーとしてだけでなく、人として成長することにも、とても良い影響を与えてくれています。」。

Having carried out such a believably emotive role so early in his career, it’s amazing to think Yagi may have never been an artist at all. Originally, he intended to pursue a football (soccer) career. But, after a serious injury, he had to rethink.

キャリアが浅い段階でこのようにリアルに感情表現をする役を演じ切った八木さんが、もしかしたらアーティストになっていなかったかもしれない、なんて信じられない。元々彼はサッカー選手を目指していたが、深刻な怪我のために考え直さなければいけなくなったのだ。

Did that setback lead to his current career? “Definitely yes. Without that injury, I would certainly not be where I am today. I was shocked at the time, but now I see it positively – it’s something that had to happen.” It’s a perfect example of one door closing and another opening.

そのような背景が今の彼に繋がっているのか？「確実にそうです！怪我が無ければ、今の僕は確実にここにはいません。
当時はショックでしたが、今は起こるべくして起こったことだと前向きに捉えています。」これは、一つのドアが閉じたなら、もう一つのドアが開く、というパーフェクトな例だ。

Having entered the entertainment industry via a 2017 EXILE audition show, he confirms that it’s his fans that keep him going. He achieved one action genre dream through last year’s Netflix film HiGH＆LOW THE WORST X. His next aspiration is a historical drama. “It’s a big dream, but one day I’d like to be in a Taiga Drama, such as Shinsengumi [elite swordsmen] or Yoshitsune [a Japanese folk hero]. Living in the past is an experience I’d like to try.”

2017年にEXILEのオーディションで芸能界入りを果たした彼は、ファンに支えられていることを確信している。彼は昨年Netflix映画「HiGH＆LOW THE WORST X」でアクションをするという夢を叶えた。彼の次の夢は、歴史物のドラマに出演すること。「大望ですが、いつか大河ドラマに出て、新撰組や義経のような時代物の役を演じてみたいです。
歴史上の人物として生きる経験をしてみたいんです。」

Yagi debuted in 2018 as a singer in the J-pop dance and vocal group that’s recently released the music video for Tell Me – a retro musical number set as a battle between opposing gangs. Then began an acting career in 2021 with My Beautiful Man, where he won the Outstanding Asian Star Prize at the Seoul International Drama Awards 2022.

八木さんは、先日レトロな2組のギャング抗争のようなセットで撮影されたMV「Tell Me」をリリースしたダンス＆ボーカルグループの歌手として、2018年にデビューした。そして2021年に「美しい彼」で俳優業をスタートし、2022年にはソウルドラマアワード2022・アジアスター賞を受賞。

Today, he continues to expand his scope as both an artist and an actor including a role in currently airing dramas (in Japan) 18/40 – Dreams and Love for Two and FUN! FUN! FANTASTICS SEASON 3 as well as the upcoming BACK TO THE MEMORIES PART 3. And hopes to continue performing for a long time to come. We’ll be watching for him.

現在も、放送中のドラマ「18/40～ふたりなら夢も恋も～」や「FUN! FUN! FANTASTICS SEASON 3」、次に公開される「BACK TO THE MEMORIES PART 3」でアーティスト兼俳優として演技の幅を広げ続けている。これからも末永い彼の活躍を願う。私達は彼を見守り続けよう。

うーん、これで完璧とは言えない翻訳になってしまいましたが…

合ってる、間違っている、というだけでなく、英文を読んで頭の中に浮かぶイメージと、それを言語化する時の言葉選びをするのが本当に大変で、5時間くらいかかっています…

インタビュアーの記事の方が難しく感じましたが、微妙にQ&Aに含まれていない話も入っていたため、両方読んだほうが良いなとは思いました。

ただ、記事の内容がどうも自分の知ってる話と違うな…という部分は少し変えていたりもします。

あと、萩原利久くんの趣味って、玉置浩二ファンで（チェリー）だってことだ、と「美しい彼」ファンは知っていると思うのですが、このインタビュアーさんは知らなかったようですね。

全然自信が無い部分もチラホラとありますが、大まかには意味がズレていない…はず…だけど、他の方も翻訳していて、そちらの方が確実なら参考にしたいので教えてください！
